Please note that the M6 north of Birmingham is one of the few toll roads in England. The toll is payable in cash on site, either in a machine or at one of the staffed booths.
Where to go around Birmingham
Birmingham is an ideal starting point for road trips since it is located at the heart of England. In the town’s vicinity you’ll find amazing scenery and cosy little villages. London is about 2.5 hours southeast, and Liverpool is only 2 hours away.
Peak District
The stunning Peak District is an hour’s drive north of Birmingham. The area became the first National Park in the UK in 1951, and since then its stunning views and famous moors have attracted nature lovers from all over. The District has several different parts, and it is ideal for hiking and cycling.
Hay-on-Wye
For those interested in literature, the Welsh Hay-on-Wye is an absolute must. It is about two hour’s north from Birmingham. In this little cosy town, you’ll find about two dozen bookstores, a number of them second hand ones. In June every year, the town hosts a big literary festival that attracts many visitors and big literary names. Other than this, the town is also historically interesting with many cosy streets and old buildings.
Stratford-upon-Avon
Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare, is approximately 45 minutes south of Birmingham. Here you’ll find a number of theatres as well as many beautiful historic buildings. There are also a few shopping centres.
