There are three airports in New York and two of these – Newark Liberty International and JFK International – service international flights. The third one, La Guardia, mainly services domestic flights.

Both Newark and JFK are about one and a half mile outside central New York. If you want to get from the airport to central New York, the AirTrains are the best alternative. However, if you want to explore the area around New York instead, hiring a car is the perfect way of getting around.

There are several good car rental possibilities from all major car rental firms both at Newark and JFK. If you want to hire a car at Newark you’ll have to take the free airport train to the right station. The car rental firms all have offices at different stops, so make sure to check where your chosen firm’s office is before you get on the train.

At JFK, you’ll also have to take a train, but here all the offices are at the same place: Federal Circle, which is the first stop.

If you want to explore New York City before heading out on the road, you can pick up your rental car at several different locations in the city instead.
