Car hire at Arlanda airport
Arlanda Airport is the biggest international airport in Sweden. It’s about a 30 minute drive from central Stockholm, and getting to and from the airport by car is smooth and easy.
On the way from the airport, follow signs for the E4 motorway and Stockholm. On the way to the airport there are two large signs for the rental car centre on the E4 motorway (Swedish: “hyrbilscentra”), before you reach the airport. There is a petrol station about six miles before the airport, in Stora Wäsby, which you can use to fill the tank before returning the car.
There are eight car rental firms at the airport. Three of them (Alamo, Enterprise and National) are inside the airport in Terminal 2. Avis, Budget, Europcar and Hertz are in a special car rental centre close to the airport, and Sixt is by a nearby car park.
There are free shuttle buses (Airport shuttle) to both places, and you can find the bus stops right outside the terminals. To get to all rental cars (apart from Sixt’s cars), take the parking bus Beta, regardless of at what terminal you are. If you’ve rented a car from Sixt, their office is by the Alfa car park. The parking bus Alfa takes you there, and the bus ride is free for all passengers.
Where to go around Stockholm
Arlanda airport is located in Sigtuna municipality, just outside Stockholm. From the airport, you can easily get to many nice places in the area. Getting a rental car is the perfect option for a Stockholm holiday, and it will allow you to discover all the gems in the area!
Sigtuna is the oldest town in Sweden, and it’s only a 15 minute drive from Arlanda Airport. There are obviously many interesting historical sights in the city, such as St. Mary’s Church and several beautiful church ruins. The town centre is also very nice with its many old wooden houses. Just strolling around the town centre is very cosy, especially in the summer.
Sala is just over 60 miles from Arlanda Airport. The city is famous for its silver mines. Sala has roots as far back as the Middle ages, but didn’t really blossom until the 1500’s when silver was found in the city. The silver mine is definitely one of the most interesting sights in Sala, and it’s well worth a visit.
Tyresö belongs to the area called Greater Stockholm, but you’ll still get some of the city noise and buzz here. In Tyresö, there’s plenty of good shopping as well as nice restaurants. You can also visit many historic sights like Tyresö Palace and Tyresö Church, which is located in the part of the municipality called the Brevik peninsula. The beautiful and popular national park Tyresta is also nearby, where you’ll find many nice footpaths.
