Where to go around Faro

Faro is located on Portugal’s southernmost tip, on the famous Algarve coast. With a rental car, you’ll be able to discover the many small, quaint villages in the area as well as the beautiful nature. Below we’ll mention a few of our favourite spots.

Tavira
The cosy town of Tavira is only half an hour’s drive east of Faro. Tavira is, just like Faro, on the Algarve coast. Other than beautiful sandy beaches, the town also has many interesting historical sights. There are no less than 37 churches!

Mértola
Mértola is a nice town situated about 75 miles north of Faro. The city is actually located in the Guadiana Valley Natural Park, and is therefore surrounded by stunning nature. Mértola also has many historical monuments. Among other things, the medieval castle towers over the town on a cliff, and the ancient city walls are still intact.

Cabo Sardão
About two hour’s drive north of Faro, on the west coast of Portugal, is the very scenic Cabo Sardão. Here you’ll see some amazing cliffs and get a gorgoues view of the Atlantic Ocean. There is also a famous big stork nest, and you can almost always get a glimpse of storks in their natural habitat. Lastly, there is also a well-known, beautiful lighthouse in Cabo Sardão.
