Our car rental offices in Wellington
There are serveral car rental offices with a large number of rental cars in Wellington. It is recommended that you book the car in advance to ensure that you will easily be able to pick up and rent the car. Below is a list of where to find our car rental offices in Wellington.
- Central Wellington: There are two car rental offices in central Wellington: one on Wakefield Street and one on Ghuznee Street. Both of these offices are very central, and are close to Wellington Waterfront Walk and The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, which is one of the city’s main attractions.
- South Wellington: South of these offices, you’ll find another office on Hania Street, near Basin Reserve. Getting from this office to Highway 1 is very easy and convenient.
- North Wellington: In the northern part of Wellington you’ll find the ferry port, where car hire is also available. There are four car rental offices right by the ferry station/dock, and another one at walking distance on Hutt Road. All of these offices are in close connection to Highway 1, and getting out of the city to its surrounding areas is therefore smooth and easy.
Car hire at Wellington Airport
Wellington Airport (airport code: WLG) is only about three and a half miles from central Wellington, and is the third largest airport in the country. The airport services both international and domestic flights. You’ll find it very easy both to rent a car at the airport, and to get to and from the airport by car.
There are five car rental companies represented at the airport. Their offices can be found on the ground floor adjacent to the Arrivals hall and the baggage reclaim area. It is well sign posted and therefore very easy to find the offices.
Where to go around Wellington
Wellington is the perfect starting point if you want to discover New Zealand by car. It is easy to get from the city to many fantastic destinations, and the mere driving around the area is a pleasure because of the amazing scenery.
The cosy town of Martinborough is about 40 miles east of central Wellington. Besides many nice little shops, cafes and restaurants, the town is also known for its many vineyards that offer wine tasting. Other than this, there are many beautiful nature trails for both hiking and biking through the incredible landscape.
Castlepoint and its stunning views are a two-and-a-half-hour drive north of Wellington. Here you’ll find both a famous lighthouse and beautiful beaches surrounded by dramatic landscape. There are also many nice footpaths in the area.
“Midgard” or “Middle-Earth” – Lord of the Rings filming locations
New Zealand is known for its breathtaking scenery and being the setting for the Lord of the rings trilogy. There are several locations that were featured in the films around Wellington. For example, you can visit Rivendell (Kaitoke Regional Park), tbe Osgiliath forest (Waitarere Forest) and parts of the Pelennor fields (Queen Elizabeth Park). All of these places are within driving distance from Wellington. You can also go to Miramar, just outside Wellington, and visit Weta Cave. Weta Cave is a visitor centre run by the company Weta, which created the costumes and weapons in the films.
