If you want to rent a car in Queenstown, it is best to pick up the car directly at the airport. You can read more about this further down. However, car hire is also available in central Queenstown. there are two car rental offices: one on Shotover Street, the other on Stanley Street.

Queenstown Airport (airport code: ZQN) is about 5 miles from Queenstown. The airport is the fourth busiest in New Zealand, and has in recent years increased in popularity. In 2015, it was voted ‘World’s Most Scenic Airport Landing’.
Where to go around Queenstown
Queenstown is surrounded by incredibly beautiful landscape. Just driving around in the area is a wonderful experience. However, there is also a lot to see and experience for the adventurous type. You’ll find no shortage of ski slopes and nature trails for hiking. If you are interested in film and fantasy, there are several places you won’t want to miss. Below we’ll mention a few of our favourite spots.
One of the most spectacular places in the area around Queenstown is Milford Sound, about 185 miles from central Queenstown. Milford Sound is located on the West Coast, and has fjords, glaciers and absolutely stunning views. It is one of the most famous and popular spots in the country. In addition to the beautiful scenery, you can also go hiking, canoeing, and visit an underwater observatory.
The Remarkables are a mountain range known for their many fantastic ski slopes during the winter months. The range is just a short drive south of Queenstown. You’ll find a large number of slopes with different levels of difficulty. Going down any of the mountains is an amazing experience. Expect stunning views, the mountains are surrounded by very beautiful landscape filled with lakes!
“Midgard” or “Middle-Earth” – Lord of the Rings filming locations
New Zealand is known as the setting of the immensely popular the Lord of the Rings trilogy. There are several locations that were featured in the films in the area around Queenstown. For example, you can visit the Cardrona Valley, which was used to for several different scenes in the movies. Twizel, north of Queenstown, is also worth a visit. It was the setting of the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, and the views there are quite magical.
