Car hire at Newcastle airport
Newcastle International Airport (airport code: NCL) is about six miles from the town centre. It is the tenth largest airport in the UK, and the second largest in northern England. The airport services many different airlines with international destinations.
In the large terminal, directly connected to the Arrivals hall, you’ll find five of the major car rental firms. Their offices are all in the same area and are very easy to find.
If you instead want to rent a car in central Newcastle, several car rental firms have offices at different locations in the city.
Where to go around Newcastle
By using Newcastle as a starting point, you can experience much of Northern England’s charm. Here you can explore everything from historic landmarks from the Roman Empire to the gorgeous nature of the area by the Scottish border.
Hadrian’s Wall
Hadrian’s Wall is one of the most historically interesting sights in the area around Newcastle and a significant portion of the Wall still stands. There is a foothpath that runs along it and we recommend starting from Carlisle. The most well-preserved sections of are between Brampton and Corbridge, and it also works well to use one of these places as a starting point for a walk along the Wall.
Northumberland National Park
Northumberland National Park is slightly north of Newcastle, close to the Scottish border. Here you’ll find beautiful hills stretching far and beyond. Within the Park there are some small communities, and there are special hiking tours leading to different tea houses located inside the Park.
Allendale Town
Just over an hour’s drive west of Newcastle is the picturesque Allendale Town. The town is nestled in the Allendane Valley and has many cosy spots. The city also has its own local brewery, and a walk in the surrounding countryside gives you many great views.
